After World War I, Frei had to leave Belgium and he made his way to Breda, the Netherlands to repair what were popularly known as Dutch street organs, but were actually built in almost every mainland European country except the Netherlands, which was where they were most populous.

And whatever the situation, we quietly love our country & ndash; unshakably, without a flag, or a street organ, no sentimentality and no drawn sword . " ( " Heimat ", in " Deutschland, Deutschland ber alles ", Berlin 1929, p . 226)

Moving away from the stereotype, in reality the size of the street organ varied from a tiny barrel organ with only 20 or fewer pipes, weighing only a few pounds, through medium sized instruments containing forty or more pipes, mounted on a hand-pushed trolley, up to large ornately decorated book-operated organs, with hundreds of pipes weighing several hundred pounds.

In the 1950 Warner Bros . animated short " Hurdy-Gurdy Hare " starring Bugs Bunny, the cartoon ends with Bugs making large amounts of money by having a ( presumably non-union ) monkey turn a street organ and an ape collecting the money from the apartment dwellers, during which he quips, " I sure hope Petrillo doesn't hear about this ! " ( The 1948 strike was ongoing at the time " Hurdy-Gurdy Hare " was in production .)
