Before the Mahatma could see the Viceroy and argue with him , he and all the prominent Congress leaders were arrested and sent to prison . महात्मा गांधी वाइसराय से मिलते और बहस करते , इसके पूर्व ही उन्हें और सभी प्रमुख कांग्रेसी नेताओं को गिरफ्तार कर जेल भेज दिया गया .

The Congress Working Committee , thereupon , adopted a resolution which the Viceroy found unacceptable and declined to see Gandhiji . तब कांग्रेस कार्यकारिणी समिति ने एक प्रस्ताव पारित किया , जो वाइसराय को अस्वीकार्य लगा और उसने गांधी जी से मिलने से ही इनकार कर दिया .

Mountbatten Plan : In March 1947 , Lord Louis Mount-batten was sent as the new Viceroy to arrange for a smooth transfer of power . माउंटबेटन योजना : मार्च , 1947 में लार्ड लुई माउंटबेटन को सत्ता के निर्बाध हस्तातंरण की व्यवस्था करने के लिए नये वाइसराय के रूप में भेजा गया .

At the time the Public Safety Bill was making a difficult and painfully slow progress in the Legislative Assembly , to which the Viceroy referred as such : उस समय ' पब्लिक सेफ्टी बिल ' ( जन सुरक्षा बिल ) विधान सभा में बड़ी धीमी गति से घिसट रहा था , जिसकी तरफ वायसराय ने कुछ यूं संकेत किया था :

On the one hand , the Viceroy had withdrawn his offer of a settlement and the Mahatma came up with his ultimatum to start his no-tax campaign in Bardoli in Gujarat . इधर वाइसराय ने समझौते की पेशकश वापस ले ली और उधर गांधी जी ने बारदोली , गुजरात से कर-दबाओ-अभियान शुरू करने की अंतिम चेतावनी दे दी .

If the Viceroy expects us to refrain from admiring this wonderful courage and high purpose behind it , he is mistaken . अगर वायसराय हमसे उम्मीद करते हैं कि वे हमें इस आश्चर्यजनक साहस और उसके पीछे के उच्च उद्देश्य की प्रशंसा करने से रोक सकते हैं , तो वह गलत समझते हैं .

After the assassination of Lord Mayo , the then Viceroy , the administration was decentralised and was placed directly under the Chief Commissioner , a newly created post . तत्कालीन वायसराय लार्ड मेयो की हत्या के बाद प्रशासन का विकेन्द्रीकरण किया गया तथा एक नव सृजित पद चीफ-कमिश्नर के सीधे नीचे रखा गया .

The Viceroy was even socially boycotted , and some young hotheads are said to have planned to kidnap him and send him back to England . वाइसराय का सामाजिक बहिष्कार तक किया गया और कहा जाता है कि कुछ युवा-क्रोधियों ने उनका अपहरण करने और उन्हें इंग़्लैंड वापस भेजने तक की योजना बना ली .

Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Motilal met the British Viceroy in December and sought an assurance that Dominion Status would , be granted to India , but it was not forthcoming . दिसंबर में महात्मा गांधी और मोतीलाल नेहरू ने ब्रिटिश वाइसराय से मिलकर यह आश्वासन चाहा कि डोमिनियन स्टेट्स भारत को दे ही दिया जायेगा .

Congress , however , was still , provided the Viceroy lifted the ordinances and permitted the Congress to continue the campaign for Purna Swaraj . लेकिन कांग्रेस अभी भी सरकार को सहयोग देने को तैयार थी , बशर्ते कि सरकार अध्यादेशों को वापस लेकर उसे पूर्ण स्वराज का आंदोलन जारी रखने को अनुमति दे दे .
