THOUGH the political supremacy of the British had been established in India in the first half of the nineteenth century the English variety of Western culture which the new rulers brought with them , had not yet made any deep impression on the Indian mind . 12 . भारत पर अंग्रेजी संसऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-ऋति का प्रभाव ह्य1857-1920हृ यद्यपि 19वीं शताबऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-दी के प्रथमार्ध में अंग्रेजों की भारत में राजनैतिक सर्वोचऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-च सऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-थापित हो चुकी ढथी , किंतु पशऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-चिमी संसऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-ऋति की अंग्रेजी की विविधता , जो नये शासक अपने साथ लाये थे , तब तक भारतीय मन पर गहरा प्रभाव नहीं डाल चुकी थी .

They realised that none but the British could grapple with the political chaos in India and establish peace and order ; that the medieval Indian culture was out of date and could not meet the economic , political and intellectual demands of the modern age , and that India had to assimilate something of the modern Western culture which had helped its rulers to their present prosperity and power . मध्वर्ती भारतीय संस्कृति भारतीय संस्कृति समय के अनुकूल नहीं रह गयी और आधुनिक युग की आर्थिक , राजनैतिक तथा बौद्धिक आवश्यकता की पूर्ति नहीं कर सकती.भारत को आधुनिक युग की आर्थिक पश्चिमी संस्कृति को किसी रूप में अपनाना होगा , जिसने उसके शासकों की वर्तमान समृद्धि और शक़्ति में सहायता की है .

I shall then proceed to discuss how , with the advent of the British , the dominant position of Western culture resulted in pushing the national culture into the background and why the contact of Indian culture with that of the West failed to produce any new fusion which could provide the basis of a new national culture . इसके बाद में यह विवेचना प्रारंभ करूंगा कि ब्रिटिश सत्ता के आगमन से , पाश्चात संस्कृति की प्रभावी स्थिति के परिणामस्वरूप , राष्ट्रीय संस्कृति किस प्रकार पीछे पृष्ठभूमि में धकेल दी गयी और क़्यों भारतीय संस्कृति का पाश्चात संस्कृति के साथ संपर्क एक नया मिश्रण उन्पन्न करने कें असमर्थ रहा जो कि एक नयी राष्ट्रीय संस्कृति को आधार दे सकता Zथा .

But the reaction of a very large section of Hindu society to Western culture was on the whole negative . The only aspect of it which appealed to them was the patriotism and nationalism of the Western peoples . They were convinced that traditional Hindu religion and culture were self-sufficient and could meet the needs of every age . राममोहन राय तथा ब्रह्म समाज के अन्य नेताओं के समान रानाडे हिदुओं में उदारवादी प्रवृति के प्रतिनिधि स्वरूप थे , जिसका पाश्यात्य संस्कृतिक पद अनुकूल असर हुआ और वे रूढ़िवादी विश्वासों और सामाजिक प्रथाओं कें सुधार और परिवर्तन लाते हुए हिंदुत्व और बहुत बड़े समुदाय की पाश्चात्य संस्कृति के प्रति प्रतिक्रिया संपूर्ण रूप में निषेधात्मक थी .

Looking at the concrete aspects of the cultural life of Hindus and Muslims , we find that in spite of the separatist movements of the last 200 years , most of the common factors which had been partly the cause and partly the effect of the cultural synthesis which took place at the time of Akbar are still there , and new common ground has been created by the influences of the modern Western culture . हिंदुओं और मुसलमानों के सांस्कृतिक जीवन के दृढ़ पहलुओं कों देखने से , हम पाते है कि विगत 200 वर्षो के पृथकतावादी आंदोलनों के बावजूद भी , अधिकांश समान घटक , जो सांस्कृतिक संश्लेषण के अंशिक रूप से कारण और कुछ अंशों में उसके प्रभाव रहे हैं , जो अकबर के समय अस्तित्व में आये , आज भी विद्यमान है और आधुनिक पाश्चात्य संस्कृति के प्रभाओं से एक नयी समान आधारभूत तैयार हो गयी हैं .

The best way to achieve this is to give up our notions of revivalism and make what is left of our common Hindustani culture the foundation of the national culture , building upon it freely , borrowing from the rural and urban cultures of the various regions and from Western culture . इसे प्रापऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-त करने को सबसे अचऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-छा तरीका है पुनरूतऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-थान के विचार को तऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-याग देना , और हमारी आम हिंदुसऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-तानी संसऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-ऋति के जो अवशेष बचे है , उन पर राषऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-ट्रीय संसऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-ऋति की नींव सऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-थापित करना और विभिनऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-न क्षेत्रों की ग्रामीण और शहरी संसऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-ऋतियों तथा पाशऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-चातऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-य संसऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-ऋति से अचऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-छे ततऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-व प्रापऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-त कर उस पर मुकऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-त रूप से राषऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-ट्री संसऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-ऋति का भवन निर्मित करना .

But unfortunately the way in which the fresh blood of modernism was transfused into the anaemic body of Indian society deprived it of just these vital ingredients and on the whole did more harm than good : In the first place , the modern Western culture which reached India was not the genuine article but an export model of which the parts came from England but were assembled in India mainly by men of mediocre ability , who could be spared after selecting political and intellectual leaders for the home country . किंतु दुर्भाग़्य से जिस तरह का ताजा रक़्त भारतीय समाज के रक़्तहीन शरीर में भरा गया , उसने उसे इन महत्वपूर्ण अव्यवों से वंचित कर दिया और कुल मिलाकर अच्छाई के स्थान पर हानि अधिक हुई प्रथम स्थिति में , आधुनिक पश्चिमी संस्कृतिक , जो भारत पहुंची तथा वह वास्तविक रूप में नहीं , बल्कि यह उसका एक निर्यात रूप था , जिसके पुर्जे इंग़्लैड सें आये , किंतु भारत में उन्हे मुख़्य रूप से अति सामान्य योग़्यता वाले व्यक़्तियों के द्वारा जमाया गया , जिन्हें अपने देश के लिए राजनैतिक बुद्धिमान नेता चुनने के बाद अलग किया जा सकता

This segues to a second goal - Muslim supremacy and Western inferiority. Islamists routinely say and do things more offensive to Westerners than anything Westerners do vis-à-vis Muslims. They openly despise Western culture; in the words of an Algerian Islamist, it's not a civilization, but a “ syphilization .” Their mainstream media publishes coarser, viler, and more violent cartoons than anything commissioned by Flemming Rose. They freely insult Judaism , Christianity , Hinduism , and Buddhism . They murder Jews just for being Jews, like Daniel Pearl in Pakistan, Sébastian Sellam and Ilan Halimi in France, and Pamela Waechter and Ariel Sellouk in the United States. Whether because of fear or inattention, Westerners assent to an imbalance whereby Muslims may offend and attack while they themselves are shielded from any such indignities or pains. इसी में दूसरा लक्ष्य छुपा हुआ है- मुस्लिम प्रभुता और पश्चिमी हीनभावना। इस्लामवादी सामान्य रूप से पश्चिम के विरुद्ध आक्रामक ढंग से व्यवहार करते हैं जबकि ऐसा इस्लाम के प्रति पश्चिम के मामले में नहीं है। वे पश्चिमी संस्कृति के विरुद्ध खुले रूप में अवमानना परक बाते करते हैं जैसा कि अल्जीरिया के एक इस्लामवादी ने इसके विरुद्ध अश्लील बात कही। उनका मुख्यधारा का मीडिया ऐसे आक्रामक कार्टून प्रकाशित करता है जिसके मुकाबले फ्लेमिंग रोज का कार्टून कुछ नहीं है। वे खुले रूप में यहूदी, ईसाई, हिन्दू और बौद्ध को अपमानित करते हैं। वे यहूदियों को केवल इसलिये मारते हैं कि वे यहूदी हैं जैसा कि पाकिस्तान में डैनियल पर्ल को मार दिया गया, फ्रांस में सेबेस्टैयन सेलाम और इलान हलीमी को और संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका में पामेला वेचर और एरियल सेलोक को। चाहे पश्चिमी लोग ध्यान न देते हों या फिर भयभीत रहते हों कि वे असंतुलन को सहन कर जाते हैं कि जब मुस्लिम पश्चिमी लोगों पर आक्रमण कर जाते हैं जबकि स्वयं ऐसे किसी आक्रमण से बच जाते हैं।
