They did so in five ways. They conducted surveillance of American government targets (military recruitment stations and bases), Israeli targets (consulate in L.A. and El-Al airlines), and Jewish targets (synagogues). The trio monitored the Jewish calendar and, the indictment notes, planned to attack synagogues on Jewish holidays “to maximize the number of casualties.” They acquired an arsenal of weapons. Ron Unz and I see the long-term danger differently. To me, the current wave of militant Islamic violence against the United States, however dangerous, is ultimately less consequential than the non-violent effort to transform it through immigration, natural reproduction, and conversion. It surprises me that Mr. Unz would find Islamists to be no greater a force than Christian churches, Mormons, Scientologists, and “Moonies.” Had Christians wanted the United States to be a Christian country, it would be one; that is one ambition that plainly does not exist. As for Mormons, Scientologists, and members of the Unification Church, it should suffice to point out that there are some 50 self-identifying Muslim states in the world, but not one that is under Mormon, Scientologist, or Unification Church control. It established the Special Services Unit to handle operations outside of New York City, where NYPD lacks jurisdiction, including several American states and eleven foreign countries. The effort has its share of successes; for example, a Muslim NYPD officer working undercover in New Jersey had a major role in Operation Arabian Knight , the June 2010 arrest of two New Jersey Muslims who pleaded guilty of planning to join the Somali terrorist group al-Shabab and then kill American troops. It also established the Demographics Unit to “map ethnic residential communities within the Tri-State area [New Jersey, Connecticut, and New York State]” and to send undercover police officers, or rakers , to monitor Muslims.
