This oddity of simultaneously adhering to and ignoring Islamic law, the Shari'a, symbolizes the uniquely complex public role of Islam in today's Turkey, as well as the challenge of understanding the Justice and Development Party (known by its Turkish abbreviation, AKP) which has dominated the country's national government since 2002. तुर्की की चर्चा इस माह के आरम्भ में तुर्की एयरलाइंस के भोजन की सूची में यात्रियों के लिये सुनिश्चित किया गया कि भोजन को चुनने में “ सूअर का माँस” नहीं रहे। इस सूची में गम्भीर रूप से चुने हुए एल्कोहल पेय रहे जिसमें कि शैम्पेन, व्हिस्की, जिन, वोदका, राकी ,शराब , बीयर ,लिकर और कोगनाक थे। इस प्रकार एक साथ अस्वाभाविक रूप से इस्लामी कानून शरिया को अपनाने औ उसकी उपेक्षा करना आज के तुर्की के सार्वजनिक जीवन में अद्बुत रूप से जटिल ढंग से इस्लाम की भूमिका का कहीं न कहीं प्रतीक भी है साथ ही यह जस्टिस एंड डेवलेपमेंट पार्टी (जिसे तुर्की में संक्षेप में एकेपी कहते हैं) को समझने की चुनौती भी प्रस्तुत करता है जिसने कि तुर्की की राष्ट्रीय सरकार पर 2002 से ही नियंत्रण स्थापित कर रखा है।
