The editors reveal themselves either confused or negligent in several passages. Here is one: they accurately describe me as seeing secularism as the answer to many of Islam's problems. But they also ascribe to me a quite different and wrong view: “For Pipes the only good Muslim is the secular Muslim.” They here make the elementary mistake of conflating the secular state (i.e., one where religion is kept apart) with a secular person (i.e., someone non-religious). It could be al Qaeda, it could be any sectarian extremists within, or foreign elements of RAW.” (RAW is the Research and Analysis Wing, India's intelligence agency.) Diplomacy has never witnessed anything like the dizzying and erratic sequence of events relating to Syria that began on Wednesday, Aug. 21 and ended 3½ weeks later, on Saturday, Sept. 14. Who won, who lost? It's too soon for a definite answer, but Bashar al-Assad is in the driver's seat, suggesting that he, Putin, and the mullahs will gain while Obama, Erdoğan, and Israel will lose. सीरिया लेनदेन में किसका लाभ किसकी हानि सीरिया को लेकर 21 अगस्त से आरम्भ हुये और 14 सितम्बर को समाप्त हुए साढे तीन सप्ताह तक चले घटनाक्रम से पहले कूटनीति ने इस प्रकार की भ्रमित और असंगत स्थिति का सामना शायद ही कभी किया हो। इसमें कौन जीता और कौन हारा? इसका निश्चित उत्तर प्राप्त करना तो कठिन है परंतु इतना तो तय है कि बशर अल असद चालक की भूमिका में हैं और यही प्रतीत होता है कि पुतिन और मुल्लाओं को लाभ होगा जबकि ओबामा , एरडोगन और इजरायल को हानि होगी।

I watched the spread of this fantastical account with bemusement and apprehension. As the author of two books and many articles on conspiracy theories, I have intensively studied these misguided attempts to understand reality. This time, I had the dubious privilege of doing so on the inside looking out. In response, I recalled two recommendations from my 1992 CIA-commissioned report suggesting ways for the American government to handle conspiracy theories . Isioma Daniel wrote an article the ThisDay newspaper in November 2002 about the Miss World beauty contest in which she responded to Muslim criticism of the pageant by asking “What would Mohammed think? In all honesty, he would probably have chosen a wife from one of them.” This led to Muslim-Christian violence that left over 200 dead and thousands homeless. In addition, the newspaper offices were burned down. Apr. 1, 2011 update : The Rev. Terry Jones ' burning of a Koran in Florida on March 20 inspired mobs to attack a United Nations office in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan, leading to the deaths of 7 UN workers and 5 Afghans. मुसलमानों की भीड़ किससे उत्तेजित होती है और किससे नहीं यह भविष्यवाणी कर पाना अत्यन्त कठिन है. द सेटेनिक वर्सेज अनेक मध्यकालीन , आधुनिक या सामयिक लेखन की तुलना में मुस्लिम भावना के लिये उतना आक्रामक नहीं था. अनेक अमेरिकी धर्मान्तरण समर्थकों ने मोहम्द के सम्बन्ध में फालवेल से भी अधिक बुरी चीजें कही हैं. दक्षिणी प्रचारक जेरी विनेस ने मुस्लिम पैगम्बर को कामुक कहा था जिसकी बारह पत्नियाँ थीं, परन्तु इस पर कोई हिंसा नहीं हुई. आखिर नार्वे के प्रचारक रूनार सोगार्ड द्वारा मोहम्मद को एक भ्रमित कामुक कहने पर यह विवाद स्थानीय ही क्यों बना रहा और डेनमार्क के कानून का विवाद वैश्विक बन गया?

Organizations intent on criticizing Israel's every move [v] by default become masters of tiny Palestinian grievances. They document in loving detail residential and transportation patterns in the West Bank, water and electricity grids in Gaza, and impediments to reaching holy places in Jerusalem. Those intent on showing Israel in a bad light must champion the Palestinians with allegations of mass executions, torture, denial of hospital services-but this should not be confused with genuine concern for the Palestinians. Nor does it lead to an understanding of Palestinian life. जो संगठन इजरायल के सभी कदमों की आलोचना करने का आशय रखते हैं वे एक तरीके से फिलीस्तीनियों की अल्प शिकायतों के स्वामी बन गये हैं। वे पश्चिमी तट की बस्तियों और परिवहन परिपाटी को अभिलेखित करने से लेकर गाजा में जल और विद्युत ग्रिड के साथ ही जेरूसलम के पवित्र स्थल तक पहुँचने में होने वाली बाधा को लेकर चिंतित रहते हैं। जो लोग इजरायल को बुरे रूप में चित्रित करना चाहते हैं वे फिलीस्तीनियों के मध्य अनेक आरोपों को लगाकर जैसे सामूहिक मृत्यु दण्ड, उत्पीडन , अस्पताल की सुविधा से वंचित रखना उनके मध्य लोकप्रिय हो जाते हैं लेकिन इनके मध्य फिलीस्तीनियों की वास्तविक चिंताओं को लेकर भ्रमित नहीं होना चाहिये। और न ही इस आधार पर फिलीस्तीनी जीवन को समझा जा सकता है।
