Thus defined, the needed response becomes clear. It is two-fold: vanquish Islamism and help Muslims develop an alternative form of Islam. Not coincidentally, this approach roughly parallels what the allied powers accomplished vis-à-vis the two prior radical utopian movements, fascism and communism. परिभाषित होने के उपरांत इस विषय में प्रतिक्रिया भी स्पष्ट हो जाती है। यह दो स्तर पर है- इस्लामवाद को नष्ट कर मुसलमानों को इस्लाम का वैकल्पिक स्वरूप विकसित करने में उनकी सहायता की जाये। यह महज संयोग नहीं है कि यह पहल उसी के समानांतर है जो मित्र शक्तियों ने इससे पूर्व कट्टरपंथी काल्पनिक आन्दोलनों फासीवाद और कम्युनिज्म के सम्बन्ध में पूर्ण की थी।

Such high regard for terrorists has several important implications. First, it points to the adherents of militant Islam being indeed “normal, good-natured young” people, and not misfits. In common with other totalitarian movements, militant Islam finds support among many accomplished, talented, and attractive individuals - which renders it all the more dangerous a threat. Second, the fact that those who murder on behalf of militant Islam often enjoy psychological soundness, educational attainment, sporting success, economic achievement, or social esteem suggests that Islamist violence cannot be reduced by adopting the “root causes” approach of addressing personal poverty and despair. The phenomenon needs to be fought head-on. आतंकवादियों के प्रति लोगों के मन में इस प्रकार सम्मान की भावना के कुछ महत्वपूर्ण परिणाम सामने आते हैं .पहला सामान्य , अच्छे स्वभाव के लोगों का भी कट्टरपंथी इस्लाम से लगाव है और वे इससे पृथक नहीं है .सामान्य रुप से अन्य अधिनायकवादी आंदोलनों के भाँति कट्टरपंथी इस्लाम को भी अत्यंत योग्य , प्रतिभाशाली और आकर्षक व्यक्तियों का समर्थन भी प्राप्त हो रहा है इससे यह खतरा और भी बढ़ जाता है .दूसरा यह तथ्य कि कट्टरपंथी इस्लाम के नाम पर हत्यायें करने वाले मनोवैज्ञानिक दृष्टि से पूरी तरह स्वस्थ होते हैं , पढ़े लिखे होते हैं..आर्थिक उपलब्धियाँ प्राप्त करते हैं, खेल -कूद से जुड़ी गतिविधियों में सफलता अर्जित करते हैं और सामाजिक सम्मान भी प्राप्त करते हैं. ऐसे लोगों का आतंकवादी गतिविधियों से जुड़ना इस बात को इंगित करता है कि इस्लामी आतंकवाद के मूल कारण को व्यक्तिगत गरीबी और हताशा में सीमित नहीं किया जा सकता . इस्लामी आतंकवाद के प्रति चिंतन की इस प्रवृति के विरुद्ध लड़ना होगा .
