It was not until 1917 that the admiralty department was again thoroughly reorganized and really began to function as a staff in May that year, when the term " Admiralty War Staff " was altered and that department and its functional role abolished and was replaced by a new to " Admiralty Naval Staff " and the new office of Chief of the Naval Staff was merged in the office of the First Sea Lord there was also appointed a new Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff and an Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff who were all given seats on the Board of Admiralty.
