The semi-armor-piercing shells from " Warspite " went through the ship without detonating, but visibly tilted her over each time . but none of the British ships were even damaged . " Erich Koellner " was scuttled shortly afterwards by detonating a depth charge in her auxiliary machinery spaces.

Two bombs exploded in the hangar area, destroying the Westland Lynx helicopter and blowing the Sea Cat launcher 80 ft ( 24 m ) into the air before it crashed back down onto the flight deck, and the third crashed through the aft auxiliary machinery room but failed to explode.

One of these hits, fired from " Bismarck ", had penetrated the torpedo protection outer bulkhead in a region very close to an auxiliary machinery space causing local flooding within the SPS, while the inner, 1.5-inch ( 2x19 mm ) D-steel holding bulkhead, however, remained intact, as the German shell was a dud.

The three masts and the bowsprit were stepped in place between September 1984 and February 1985 . " Warrior " s engines, boilers and auxiliary machinery were considered too expensive to rebuild, so replicas were built from sheet steel with a few components made from cast iron to duplicate the look of the real equipment.
