Flames on Sept. 11 inside the U.S. consulate in Benghazi. The Rushdie crisis suddenly erupted when the ruler of Iran, Ayatollah Khomeini, put a death edict on a novelist for having written a magical realist novel, The Satanic Verses , declaring that the book was “against Islam, the Prophet, and the Koran.” That incident was then followed by a long list of similar assaults - concerning a U.S. Supreme Court frieze in 1997, American evangelical leader Jerry Falwell in 2002, Newsweek in 2005, the Danish cartoons in 2006, Pope Benedict XVI also in 2006, Florida preacher Terry Jones in 2010, and U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan early in 2012. If Ankara's irresponsible behavior has worrisome implications for the Middle East and Islam, it also has a mitigating aspect. Turks have been at the forefront of developing what I call Islamism 2.0 , the popular, legitimate, and non-violent version of what Ayatollah Khomeini and Osama bin Laden tried to achieve forcefully via Islamism 1.0. By way of demonstration, allow me to recall the similar Muslim-Western confrontation that took place in 1989 over the publication of Salman Rushdie's novel The Satanic Verses and the resulting death edict from Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini. It first appeared, as now, that the West aligned solidly against the edict and the Muslim world stood equally with it. And none of this is new. During the Cold War, Islamists favored the Soviet Union over the United States. As Ayatollah Khomeini put it in 1964, “America is worse than Britain, Britain is worse than America and the Soviet Union is worse than both of them. Each one is worse than the other, each one is more abominable than the other. Osama bin Laden years ago declared a jihad against all Christians and Jews while his friend Mullah Omar, the Taliban dictator, talked publicly about “the destruction of America,” which he hoped would happen “within a short period of time.” That militant Islamic leaders wish the same for Israel should hardly be news. Hostile statements provoking the West . Israel's Jerusalem Day commemorates the city's unification under its control in 1967. But, as Israel Harel writes in Ha'aretz , this tribute has declined from a national holiday to just “the holiday of the religious communities.” By contrast, the Muslim version of Jerusalem Day - instituted 11 years later, by Ayatollah Khomeini in 1979 - attracts crowds of as many as 300,000 people in distant Tehran, serves as a platform for rousing harangues, and is gaining support steadily around the Muslim world. Strangely, as “Old Europe” finds its backbone, the Anglosphere quivers. So awful was the American government reaction, it won the endorsement of the country's leading Islamist organization, the Council on American-Islamic Relations . This should come as no great surprise, however, for Washington has a history of treating Islam preferentially . On two earlier occasions it also faltered in cases of insults concerning Muhammad. In 1989, Salman Rushdie came under a death edict from Ayatollah Khomeini for satirizing Muhammad in his magical-realist novel, The Satanic Verses . Rather than stand up for the novelist's life, President George H.W. Bush equated The Satanic Verses and the death edict, calling both “offensive.” The then secretary of state, James A. Baker III, termed the edict merely “regrettable.” आश्चर्य है कि प्राचीन यूरोप के रीढ़ की हड्डी सीधी हो रही है लेकिन अमेरिकी सरकार की प्रतिक्रिया दुखद रही है .इस प्रतिक्रिया के बाद सरकार को देश के अग्रणी इस्लामवादी संगठन काउंसिल ऑन अमेरिकन इस्लामिक रिलेश्न्स का भी समर्थन मिल गया. वैसे यह कोई आश्चर्य का विषय नहीं है क्योंकि इस्लाम को प्राथिमकता देने का वाशिंगटन का अपना इतिहास रहा है . इससे पहले भी दो मौंकों पर मोहम्मद के अपमान के विषय पर इसने जल्दबाजी दिखाई है.

Afterward, when the world was exploding around him and the lethal blackbirds were massing on the climbing frame in the school courtyard, he felt annoyed with himself for forgotting the name of the BBC reporter, a woman, who had told him that his old life was over and a new, darker existence was about to begin. She called him at home, on his private line, without explaining how she got the number. “How does it feel,” she asked him, “to know that you have just been sentenced to death by the Ayatollah Khomeini?” It was a sunny Tuesday in London but the question shut out the light. This is what he said, without really knowing what he was saying: “It doesn't feel good.” This is what he thought: I'm a dead man . He wondered how many days he had left, and thought the answer was probably a single-digit number. He put down the telephone and ran down the stairs from his workroom at the top of the narrow Islington row house where he lived. The living-room windows had wooden shutters and, absurdly, he closed and barred them. Then he locked the front door. He apologizes for the Iranian government (it “has been meticulous in complying with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty”) and blames Washington for having “encouraged Iran to proceed” with building nuclear weapons. Sick opposes letting U.S. victims of Iranian-sponsored terrorism collect large damages against Tehran.
