Wittichius was comprehensively attacked in a pamphlet by Jacobus Leydekker in 1719 . His position became a matter of wide discussion in the United Provinces; he defended himself by analogy with Johannes Bredenburg, and arguing that Cartesianism was effective against Spinozism.
