As melancholy and as skeptical as those two films are, neither comes close to dramatizing the dubiousness of war as it's seen in the best of the Vietnam movies, but they have something going for them that no other American war movies ever had : They are about a war that was lost even before it got going, that was waged in behalf of a cause never made comprehensible and that promised a victory impossible to achieve.
