In January 1805 the heritors met and decided that a new church should be built instead of repairing the old one, and that the new church should be capable of containing 250 people.

A superior ( e . g ., a heritor ) might authorise his agent or factor to give possession of his property to someone else through a document known as a " precept of sasine ".

The heritors agreed in March 1780 to commence building work on the basis of his plan, in the shape of an octagon : he may have seen similar churches during his recent years spent in Europe.
