A prolific writer, he was the author of well over a 1000 published works on subjects that included mycology, plant pathology and physiology, microbiology, virology, lichenology, the systematics of cultivated plants, agronomy, and the history of botany.

Against this background appeared the Swedish botanist Erik Acharius disciple of Linnaeus, who is today considered the father of lichenology, starting the taxonomy of lichens with his pioneering study of Swedish lichens in Lichenographiae Suecicae Prodromus of 1798 or in his Synopsis Methodica Lichenum, Sistens omnes hujus Ordinis Naturalis of 1814.

The plant genus " Acharia ", several plants species ( e . g ., " Rosa acharii " and " Conferva acharii " ), and one insect, " Tortrix achariana " have all been named after Acharius; likewise, the Acharius Medal is awarded for lifetime achievement in lichenology.
