According to the Wall Street Journal , “Across Europe, dozens of people are now in hiding or under police protection because of threats from Muslim extremists.” Even Pope Benedict XVI received a flurry of threats in the aftermath of his quoting a Byzantine emperor on the subject of Islam. In the Netherlands alone, politicians reported 121 death threats against them in just one year. The November 2004 execution on an Amsterdam street of Theo van Gogh - a well known libertarian, filmmaker, talk show host, newspaper columnist, and mischief-maker who had ridiculed Islam - traumatized his country and led to a brief state of insurrection . डेनमार्क का अनुभव तो अत्यंत जटिल है। वाल स्ट्रीट जर्नल के अनुसार “ समस्त यूरोप में दर्जनों लोग मुस्लिम अतिवादियों की धमकी से या तो छुपे हैं या फिर पुलिस सुरक्षा में हैं”। यहाँ तक कि पोप बेनेडेक्ट 16 को पूर्वी रोमन के एक सम्राट को इस्लाम के सम्बन्ध में उद्धृत करने के कारण अनेक धमकियाँ मिल गयी थीं। नीदरलैण्ड में ही अकेले राजनेताओं ने एक वर्ष के अन्दर 121 मौत की धमकियाँ मिलने की बात कही है। नवम्बर 2004 में एम्स्टर्डम में एक फिल्म निर्माता, समाचार पत्र में स्तम्भ लेखक, टाक शो प्रस्तोता थियो वान गाग को इस्लाम की खिल्ली उडाने के आरोप में जान से मार दिया गया जिससे समस्त देश सन्न रह गया।

Westerners are indeed waking up to this threat. One can get a vivid sense of trends by looking at developments in Europe, which on the topics of immigration, Islam, Muslims, Islamism, and Shari'a (Islamic law) is ahead of North America and Australia by about twenty years. One sign of change is the growth of political parties focused on these issues, including the U.K. Independence Party, the National Front in France, the People's Party in Switzerland, Geert Wilder's Party for Freedom in the Netherlands, the Progress Party in Norway, and the Swedish Democrats. The edict set several precedents in the West. A foreign political leader successfully ignored conventional limits on state powers. A religious leader at will intervened directly, with little cost or resistance, in Western cultural affairs. And a Muslim leader established the precedent of applying an aspect of Islamic law, the Shari'a, in an overwhelmingly non-Muslim country. On this last point: Western states have, at times, served as Khomeini's effective agents. The government of Austria imposed a suspended prison sentence on a person who defied the Rushdie Rules, while the governments of France and Australia brought charges that could have meant jail time. Most strikingly, authorities in Canada , Great Britain , the Netherlands , Finland , and Israel actually jailed Rushdie-Rule trespassers. It takes effort to recall the innocent days before 1989, when Westerners freely spoke and wrote about Islam and related subjects. इस आदेश ने पश्चिम के लिये अनेक उदाहरण निर्धारित किये। एक विदेशी राजनीतिक नेता ने सफलतापूर्वक राज्य की सत्ता की सीमाओं की परम्परा की अवहेलना की। एक मजहबी नेता ने अपनी इच्छा से पश्चिम के सांस्कृतिक मामलों में सीधा हस्तक्षेप किया और वह भी बिना किसी कीमत या विरोध के। एक मुस्लिम नेता ने एक गैर मुस्लिम बहुल देश में शरियत को स्थापित करने के उदाहरण को स्थापित किया। इस अंतिम बिन्दु पर समय समय पर पश्चिम के देश खोमेनी के एजेंट सिद्ध हुए ।आस्ट्रिया की सरकार ने एक व्यक्ति के ऊपर जेल की सजा घटा दी जिसने रश्दी नियम की अवहेलना की। जबकि फ्रांस और आस्ट्रेलिया ने इसी मामले में ऐसी सजा दी जिसका अर्थ जेल था। सबसे आश्चर्य की बात है कि कनाडा, ब्रिटेन, नीदरलैण्ड , फिनलैंड और इजरायल में वास्तव में रश्दी नियम का उल्लंघन करने वालों को जेल की सजा दी गयी। उस समय को याद करने के लिये प्रयास करना पडता है जब 1989 से पूर्व रश्दी नियम से पूर्व के निर्दोष दिनों में पश्चिम के लोगों को इस्लाम और मुस्लिम के सम्बन्ध में कुछ भी कहने की स्वतंत्रता थी।
