Most important, Mr. Erdoğan sidelined the military establishment (Turkey's ultimate political authority since the days of Atatürk) and the rest of its deep state-the intelligence services, the judiciary, law enforcement and their criminal allies. The AKP government also reversed Atatürk's legacy of looking to the West for inspiration and leadership. The almost complete collapse of anti-Islamist forces-Atatürkist, socialist, Westernizing, military and other-is the most surprising development of the past decade. Opposition leaders did little more than say “no” to AKP initiatives, offering few positive programs and often adopting positions even worse than those of the AKP (such as promoting pro-Damascus and pro-Tehran policies). Likewise, intellectuals, journalists, artists and activists carped and complained but failed to propose an alternative, non-Islamist vision. सबसे अधिक महत्वपूर्ण है कि एरडोगन ने सेना को किनारे लगा दिया ( अतातुर्क के समय से ही तुर्की की आत्यन्तिक राजनीतिक शक्ति) साथ ही राज्य के अन्य गम्भीर स्तम्भ गुप्तचर सेवा, न्यायपालिका , कानून प्रवर्तन तथा उनके आपराधिक सहयोगी। एकेपी की सरकार ने अतातुर्क की उस विरासत को भी उलट दिया जिसके अन्तर्गत वे नेतृत्व और प्रेरणा के लिये पश्चिम की ओर देखते थे।

The means to take these steps exist; what prevents them from taking shape is the left being in a state of “high dudgeon” and the right not even daring to propose such measures. “The result is a paralysis that the terrorists probably did not hope for in their most optimistic projections, an arbitrary and gratuitous failure of will.” हेल्प्रिन उन कदमों को रेखांकित करते हैं जो गंभीरतापूर्वक युद्ध लड़ने की स्थिति में घर में और बाहर उठाए जाने की आवश्यकता है . घर में जो कदम उठाए जाने चाहिए उसमें 30 हजार सशक्त बॉर्डर पेट्रोल द्वारा सीमा को सुरक्षित करना , आतंकवाद के समर्थन का तनिक भी रिकार्ड रखने वाले विदेशी व्यक्ति को देश से बाहर भेजना शामिल है . आतंकवाद के साथ संबंध के संदेह वाले अमेरिकी नागरिकों का निकटतम सर्वेक्षण कराना तथा जैविक और रासायनिक युद्ध के एजेंटों के विरुद्ध मैनहैटन जैसा प्रोजेक्ट आरंभ कराना .ऐसे कदम उठाए जाने की स्थितियां अस्तित्व में हैं लेकिन ऐसे कदम नहीं उठाए जाते क्योंकि दक्षिणपंथी ऐसे कदम उठाने की सलाह नहीं देते और वामपंथियों का आवेश भी इसमें आड़े आता है . इसके परिणाम स्वरुप ऐसा अपाहिजपन उभरता है जिसकी कल्पना तो स्वयं आतंकवादी भी अत्यंत आशावादी स्थितियों में भी नहीं करते होंगे.

We will triumph over this new variant of barbarism so that a modern form of Islam can emerge. इस्लामवादी पश्चिम से घृणा करते हैं क्योंकि इसे ईसाइयत के समकक्ष मानते हैं , ऐतिहासिक रूप से इसके प्रति शत्रुता के चलते और मुसलमानों पर व्यापक प्रभाव के कारण भी इससे घृणा करते हैं। इस्लामवाद अस्वीकार करने, पराजित करने और पश्चिमी संस्कृति को पराभूत करने के अभियान को प्रेरित करता है। इस आग्रह के बाद भी इस्लामवादी पश्चिमी प्रभाव को आत्मसात करते हैं जिसमें कि विचारधारा की अवधारणा भी है। निश्चित रूप से इस्लामवाद इस्लाम को एक राजनीतिक विचारधारा में परिवर्तित कर देता है। इस्लामवाद सही रूप में कट्टरवादी स्वप्निल जगत का स्वाद देता है जो कि अन्य “ वादों” की भाँति एक वाद है जिसकी तुलना फासीवाद और कम्युनिज्म से की जा सकती है। उदाहरण के लिये इन दो आंदोलनों की भाँति इस्लामवाद भी षडयंत्रकारी अवधारणा पर काफी निर्भर रहता है और इसी संदर्भ में विश्व की व्याख्या करता है और अपनी महत्वाकाँक्षा के लिये राज्य प्राप्त करना चाहता है और इसकी प्राप्ति के लिये कोई भी हथकंडे अपनाता है।
