But there is a happy ending to this story. Irate Democrats bombarded the Casey campaign with protests and, just four days after the original story came out, Casey made an about-face and told the Forward he would “make sure this government moves the embassy to Jerusalem.” Casey is indeed “proving himself to be a quick study,” as the Forward noted. Friends and co-workers condemned such information as “guilt by association.” Nothing in Hawash's actions, they insisted, justified his incarceration, and they made their views known. They launched FreeMikeHawash.org and wrote letters to the editor. They set up a legal defense fund and staged protests on the streets of Portland, Ore. As I argued in a 2007 analysis, “ Europe's Stark Options ,” the continent's future is likely to consist of either Islamization or protracted civil conflict. I sketched the possibility of “indigenous Europeans - who do still constitute 95 percent of the continent's population - waking up one day and asserting themselves. ' Basta! ' they will say, and reclaim their historic order. This is not so remote; a chafing among Europeans, less among elites than the masses, loudly protests changes already underway. Illustrations of that resentment include the anti- hijab legislation in France, irritation over the restrictions of national flags and Christian symbols, and the insistence on serving wine at state dinners . In light of this blame-Jones consensus among the elite, the replies to a poll sponsored by a left-wing U.K. newspaper, the Guardian , come as something of a surprise. Thanks to the demonstrations, we can be newly hopeful that Turkey may avoid the path it had been on, that of despotism, Islamification and increasingly rogue foreign relations.
