Besides stone tools, other stone artifacts found at Melkhoutboom included red and yellow ochre, pieces of shale and micaceous sandstone ( which are not found naturally in or near the cave and were therefore likely imports into the site ), and unmodified slabs of quartzite and quartzitic sandstone, some associated with hearths.

The famous Table Mountain forms part of the Cape Fold Belt, being made up of the local lowest ( oldest ) strata of the Cape Supergroup, composed predominantly of quartzitic sandstone which forms the impressive, almost vertical cliffs which characterize the mountain and the rest of the range which constitutes the backbone of the Cape Peninsula.

The Upper Tal can be subdivided into lower quartzitic sequence and upper thick calcareous sequence containing abundant fragmentary shells of gastropods, bryozoa, etc . The Phulchatti quartzite succession represents the deposits of a shoal environment, while the uppermost shell limestone sequence indicates an increasing energy of the shallow tidal sea, and a marine transgression in the Cretaceous.

The municipal area s northwesternmost corner in the Rhaunen State Forest ( Sangwald and Jungenwald ) is part of a Taunus quartzite block, whose continuation can also be seen in the higher elevations to the west, namely the Sandkopf, the Wildenburger Kopf and the M�rschieder Burr ( stratigraphy : Taunus quartzite; petrography : quartz sandstone and quartzitic sandstone with traces of claystone and siltstone ).
