The Revenger's Club steal a devastatingly powerful bomb called the Desolation Engine, kidnap Kenspeckle and Tanith, and then use a horde of zombies-headed by Vaurien Scapegrace, who they murdered for lying that he was a hardened killer to them to break into the Midnight Hotel and free a remnant-a dark, possessive soul that controls its host.

Strangely enough, despite his reputation as a worldwide feared mercenary and murderer, Sanguine appears remarkably inept at his profession; apart from killing Vaurien Scapegrace and turning him into a zombie, he has never actually killed someone in the course of the books, and appears to only offer a physical threat to the surprised, the helpless and those without combat training, and is mainly used as a mode of transportation rather than a fighter by his employers.

Though the author no doubt means to parody Jake's diagrammatic thinking, her storytelling ratifies his simplistic and deeply cynical outlook : " The world was divided into those who lived interesting lives, broke the rules and didn't give a good goddamn about the consequences, and those who, because of inherent cowardice, self-pity and lack of imagination, always chose safety over risk and then lorded it over the scapegrace others with their noble sufferings ."
