The familiar movie daredevils played by Bruce Willis in three " Die Hards " and Mel Gibson in three " Lethal Weapons " are, in turn, descendants of Bond, only a lot scruffier, a great deal less privileged and decidedly unluckier in love, and therefore more readily " identifiable " for the ordinary guys of the target audience.

The plumb-line straight streets and uniform-height trees are still well tended, but Lakewood's scruffier neighbors are beginning to press in on the proud little city's borders, bringing gang crime, traffic congestion and some of the sense of unchecked suburban sprawl that infects the Los Angeles Basin . A city that was built all at once and inhabited all at once wears out all at once.
