Recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, the artificial skin consists of a two-layer membrane : one is made up of collagen, a fibrous protein from animal tendons and animal cartilage, and the other of silicone rubber called silastic, which is eventually peeled off as the wound heals and replaced with a thin layer of the patient's own skin.
