With lithium oxide and sodium oxide it reacts to form salts of Se VI O 5 4 " and Se VI O 6 6 " : With Li 2 O, it gives Li 4 SeO 5, containing the trigonal pyramidal anion Se VI O 5 4 " with equatorial bonds, 170.6-171.9 pm; and longer axial Se-O bonds of 179.5 pm.

The converter is based on the electrolyte used in the sodium sulfur battery, sodium beta3-alumina, a crystalline phase of somewhat variable composition containing aluminum oxide, Al 2 O 3, and sodium oxide, Na 2 O, in a nominal ratio of 5 : 1, and a small amount of the oxide of a small-cation metal, usually lithium or magnesium, which stabilizes the beta3 crystal structure.
