West Africa's role is a new one. Until late 2005, emigrants gravitated to Morocco, in part because, separated by the Straits of Gibraltar, it is a mere eight miles away from Europe. Also, they could easily sneak into the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla . At worst, they could reach the Canary Islands, a Spanish territory 70 miles off the coast of West Africa. The U.S. government wrongly arrested Brandon Mayfield, 37, of Beaverton, Ore. on May 6. A fingerprint sent from Madrid apparently connected him to the March 11 bombings there that killed 191 people and injured 2,000. When the Spanish government identified the fingerprint as that of an Algerian, the Department of Justice requested that Mr. Mayfield be released, and he was on May 20. 6 मई को अमेरिका की सरकार ने बीवरटन ओर निवासी 37 वर्षीय बैण्डन मेफील्ड को भूलवश गिरफ्तार कर लिया. मैड्रिड से भेजे गये अंगुली के निशान के चलते उसे 11 मार्च के मैड्रिड धमाकों से जुड़ा माना गया जिस धमाके में 191 लोगों की मृत्यु हुयी थी और 2,000 लोग घायल हुये थे. जब स्पेन की सरकार को पता चला कि अंगुलियों के ये निशान एक अल्जीरियाई मूल के व्यक्ति के हैं तो न्याय विभाग ने मेफील्ड को मुक्त करने का आग्रह किया और उसे मुक्त कर दिया गया.

Would-be African immigrants arrive on a boat on May 18 at the port of Los Cristianos, Tenerife, Canary Islands. These gruesome odds notwithstanding, the waves of immigration keep growing, in large part because once they land on Spanish territory, their reception is so accommodating and few illegals are ever deported . (A head of emergency services in the Canaries, Gerardo Garcia, has compared landing there to going on holiday .) On May 18 , a record 656 people landed in the Canaries, or one-seventh of the total number of arrivals in all of 2005. “It is almost like an invasion ,” a volunteer in the Canaries lamented, Agence France-Presse reported. परन्तु बहुत समय नहीं हुआ जब स्पेन और यूरोपीयन संघ के भारी दबाव के चलते मोरक्को के अधिकारियों ने इन अवैध आप्रवासियों पर कड़ी कार्रवाई करते हुये बिना किसी प्रावधान के उन्हें रेत में मरने को छोड़ दिया. यही कुछ मोरक्को के दक्षिण में स्थित इसके राज्य क्षेत्र पश्चिमी सहारा में भी हुआ. इसी बीच यूरोप के सामुद्रिक सीमा सुरक्षा बल ने भूमध्य सागर में अपनी गश्त कुशलतापूर्वक तेज कर दी.
