State-run schools and universities do not charge tuition fees and textbooks are provided free to all students, although, from 2011 onwards, there has been noticed a shortage in new textbooks, forcing students to either buy stock books from bookshops, or participate in parent-teacher association-run book trades.

The English Heritage report states " it is possible that the wheel pit and parts of the wheel itself are the remnants of the new wheel which was recorded in the Stock Book of 1822 . . . and should be considered of considerable historic significance ".

When NASC started in 1990 it inherited hundreds of stocks from the Arabidopsis Information Service ( AIS )-Started by Robbelen in 1965 and continued by Burger ( 1971 ), Kranz ( 1978 ), and Kranz and Kirchheim ( 1981, 1987 ), the AIS donated its complement of stocks listed in the 24th edition of the AIS stock book.
