St Niklaus sits in the Mattertal, the steep valley that runs from Stalden to Zermatt, and is surrounded by some of the highest summits in the Alps, such as Dom and Weisshorn.

The Weisshorn forms a magnificent star amid the constellation of mountains around Zermatt, and is about 15, 000 feet high : seen from Monte Rosa its peak is remarkably like that of the Dom ."

Further to the north, we had an admirable view of the two great ranges which enclose the valley of the Gorner Visp, that to the west culminating in the Weisshorn, and that to the east in the Dom or Grabenhorn, the highest point of the Mischabel.

The topographic prominence of the Matterhorn is as the ridge connecting it with a higher summit ( in this case the Weisshorn, which is the culminating point of the range west of the Mattertal valley ) sinks to a height of at the Col Durand, a saddle between the Pointe de Zinal and the Mont Durand.

From 1906 to 1914, Young and Knubel climbed together each summer, making a number of first ascents together, including the Tschhorn's south face, the Weisshorn's southeast and northeast faces, the Rimpfischhorn and Zinalrothorn's east faces, the Gspaltenhorn's west face, Grandes Jorasses'west ridge, and Mont Brouillard.

During the Edwardian Period, and up until the outbreak of hostilities heralding World War I, Young made several new and difficult ascents in the Alps, including noted routes on the Zermatt Breithorn ( the " Younggrat " ), the west ridge of the Gspaltenhorn, on the west face of the Weisshorn, and a dangerous and rarely repeated route on the south face of the Tschhorn.

But, though it rises in a number of lofty peaks, such as the Mont Vlan ( 3, 727 m ), the Matterhorn ( 4, 478 m ), the Lyskamm ( 4, 527 m ), the Nord End of Monte Rosa ( 4, 575 m ), and the Weissmies ( 4, 023 m ), many of the highest points of the region, such as the Grand Combin ( 4, 314 m ), the Dent Blanche ( 4, 357 m ), the Weisshorn ( 4, 505 m ), the true summit or Dufourspitze ( 4, 634 m ) of Monte Rosa itself, and the Pizzo Tambo ( 3, 279 m ) and Piz Timun ( 3, 209 m ).
