In a case filed by journalists and a social action group in Bombay seeking judicial redress on behalf of pavement dwellers and hawkers who faced the threat of forcible eviction and demolition of their dwellings by the Bombay Municipal Corporation , the court held for the first time that the Right to Life enshrined in Article 21 includes the right to livelihood : “ Deprive a person of his right to livelihood and you shall have deprived him of his life . ” पत्रकारों और मुंबई के एक सामाजिक कार्रवाई समूह द्वारा दायर किए गए एक वाद में पटरी पर रहने वालों और खोमचे वालों की ओर से न्यायिक राहत पाने के लिए आवेदन किया गया था जिन्हें मुंबई नगर निगम द्वारा बलपूर्वक अपनी जगह से हटाए जाने और अपनी खोलियों के गिराए जाने का खतरा था.इस मामले में न्यायालय ने पहली बार यह निर्णय दिया कि संविधान के अनुच्छेद में प्रतिष्ठापित जीवन के अधिकार में आजीविका का अधिकार समाविष्ट है : ? व्यक्ति को उसकी आजीविका से वंचित करना , उसे उसके जीवन से वंचित करना है . ?
