The " Kehl " control system used a control stick that started or stopped the motion of the aerodynamic controls on the bomb, the position of the control stick did not directly represent the position of the controls ( as is more common today ).

Being performed under conditions far beyond normal aerodynamic control and well into a stall without thrust vectoring, this is a form of passive supermaneuverability, possible because of aircraft design rather than thrust vectoring, which provides a way to actively control the aircraft well outside of the normal flight envelope.

The suborbital X-15 and a companion training aero-spacecraft, the NF-104 AST, both intended to travel to an altitude that rendered their aerodynamic control surfaces unusable, established a convention for locations for thrusters on winged vehicles not intended to dock in space; that is, those that only have attitude control thrusters.

In 1906 the Wright brothers obtained a patent not for the invention of an airplane ( which had existed for a number of decades in the form of gliders ) but for the invention of a system of aerodynamic control that manipulated a flying machine's surfaces, including lateral flight control, although rudders, elevators and ailerons had been invented long before their efforts began.
