It is broadly similar to what happens to bull sperm kept in bottles immersed in liquid nitrogen : although its normal life is only a few days, it can be kept alive ( actually in suspended animation ) for more than an year because at this low temperature all chemical and biological reactions practically cease until the sperm is returned to normal temperature to revitalize and fertilize cows.
