The numbers had no relation to actual compass headings, but generally Nike sites numbered 01 to 25 were to the northeast and east, those numbered 26 to 50 were to the southeast and south, those numbered 51 to 75 were to the southwest and west, and those numbered 76 to 99 were to the northwest and north.

In contrast, for decades planes have flown by proceeding at a specified compass heading toward or away from radio beacons on the ground, a system that makes it easy for controllers to keep track of planes in flight but can also take them miles out of their way, and keep fast planes bottled up behind slower ones.

Having determined the drift, the aircraft must be flown so that the compass heading is the required bearing adjusted for drift at the same time as the RBI reading is 0 or 180 adjusted for drift . An NDB may also be used to locate a position along the aircraft's current track ( such as a radial path from a second NDB or a VOR ).
