Husni Mubarak of Egypt addresses the Gaza donors' conference. It took place in Sharm El-Sheikh, attended by delegations from 71 states, plus 16 regional, international, and financial organizations. Its stated goal was to raise US$2.8 billion, of which $1.3 was for rebuilding what had been destroyed in the course of Israel's recent war on Hamas (the rest would be sent to the Palestinian Authority to help improve its standing). The actual amount raised at the conference was $4.5 billion which, when added to previously committed funds, means the grand total for Gaza and the PA comes to $5.2 billion, to be disbursed over a two-year period. A delighted Egyptian foreign minister called the amount “beyond our expectations.” U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called it “a very productive conference” क्या मैं अकेला ऐसा व्यक्ति हूँ जो कि कल विश्वास नहीं कर पा रहा था और बार बार आँखें मलकर देख रहा था कि क्या यह सत्य है कि जब मिस्र की सरकार ने “ गाजा के पुनर्निर्माण के लिये फिलीस्तीनी अर्थव्यवस्था के सहयोग में एक अंतरराष्ट्रीय सम्मेलन” की मेजबानी की?

Robert Spencer of Jihad Watch generalizes that jihadists and Islamic supremacists worldwide showed “unalloyed joy.” The New York Times finds public reaction in the Middle East mostly “euphoric.” John Esposito of Georgetown University emphasizes the Muslim world's welcome to Obama as an “internationalist president.” हमास और मिस्र , जार्डन, इराक, भारत, इंडोनेशिया और फिलीपींस के इस्लामवादी आन्दोलन भी ओबामा के चुनाव से अति उत्साहित हुए। जिहाद वाच के राबर्ट स्पेंसर ने सामान्य रूप से कह दिया कि विश्व भर के जिहादी और इस्लामी सर्वोच्च्तावादियों ने अत्यन्त प्रसन्नता दिखाई। न्यूयार्क टाइम्स ने पाया कि मध्य पूर्व में लोगों की प्रतिक्रिया भी हर्षप्रधान थी। जार्जटाउन विश्वविद्यालय के जान एस्पोसिटो ने जोर दिया कि कि मुस्लिम विश्व ने ओबामा का स्वागत एक “ अंतरराष्ट्रवादी राष्ट्रपति” के रूप में किया।

Focusing on settlements had the inadvertent but predictable effect of instantly impeding diplomatic progress. A delighted Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Authority responded to U.S. demands on Israel by sitting back and declaring that “The Americans are the leaders of the world. … I will wait for Israel to freeze settlements.” Never mind that Abbas personally had negotiated with six Israeli prime ministers since 1992, each time without an offer to stop building settlements: why should he now demand less than Obama? बस्तियों पर जोर देने का प्रभाव कूटनीति पर होना ही था। प्रसन्न होकर फिलीस्तीन अथारिटी के महमूद अब्बास ने इजरायल के लिये अमेरिका की माँग पर प्रतिक्रिया दी और घोषित किया कि, “ अमेरिका विश्व का नेता है……. मैं इस बात की प्रतीक्षा करूँगा कि इजरायल बस्तियों पर रोक लगाये”। यह ध्यान देने योग्य है कि अब्बास ने 1992 से इजरायल के छह प्रधानमंत्रियों से बातचीत की है और प्रत्येक बार किसी भी अवसर पर बस्तियों को रोकने का प्रस्ताव नहीं रखा लेकिन आखिर क्यों वे ओबामा से कम इस माँग को रखें?

Of all the problems the administration faces globally, that if there was one problem that I would recommend to the president that if he could do anything he wanted to solve one problem, this would be it. Finding a solution to this problem has ripples that echo, that would run globally and affect many other problems that we face elsewhere in the globe. The reverse is not true. This is the epicenter, and this is where we should focus our efforts. And I am delighted that this administration is doing so with such enthusiasm and commitment. प्रशासन के सामने वैश्विक स्तर पर जो भी समस्यायें हैं उनमें से यदि किसी एक समस्या के बारे में मैं राष्ट्रपति को सुझाव दूँगा कि यदि उस एक समस्या के समाधान की दिशा में वे कुछ कर सकते हैं तो यही समस्या होगी। इस समस्या का समाधान आवश्यक है , जिसका वैश्विक सन्दर्भ है और आज विश्व में हम जिन समस्याओं का सामना कर रहे हैं उन्हें भी यह प्रभावित करती है। जबकि इसके उलट बात सत्य नहीं है। यही मूल बिंदु है और हमें अपना प्रयास इसी ओर लगाना चाहिये। और मुझे इस बात की प्रसन्नता है कि प्रशासन इसे अत्यंत उत्साह और निष्ठा से कर रहा है।

To which my response is this: I am delighted to hear that Muhammad Ali did these good deeds. But by 2002 he was far along with Parkinsonism, so his decisions were largely made by his handlers in his name. These do not provide real insight into his character. That character, rather, was shown earlier, when Ali had full control of his facilities. To understand that better, I turn to Jack Cashill, author of the forthcoming book, Sucker Punch: The Hard Left Hook That Dazed Ali and Killed King's Dream . Cashill sent me a copy of the book manuscript and it, to say the least, confirms my thesis about Ali's poor behavior.
