In 1901 Hoffmann published with Ernest Thompson Seton " Bird Portraits " and in 1904 released " A Guide to the Birds of New England and Eastern New York ", a work that focused on field marks, behavior, habitat, call notes and songs in order to facilitate bird identification in the field.

Ludlow Griscom helped to establish the now widely held view that birds can be reliably identified " in the field " by looking at field marks ( distinctive plumages, behaviors, etc ., that are discernible from far away ) rather than " in the hand " ( for example, by trapping or killing ).

When the idea came to him about how to organize the species, depicting each bird with separate paintings for each plumage, accompanied with notes on behavior or unique field marks, descriptions of voice, range maps and similar confusing species all on the same page, so did the idea of the paintings of the flying birds at the top of each page.
