They include Paul G . Nipkow, whose crude disk in 1884 showed a way to send pictures by wire; Boris Rosing, who designed a television system using a cathode-ray tube receiver in 1907; and extensive material on Zworykin, the inventor of the iconoscope.

Although his breakthrough would be incorporated into the design of RCA's " iconoscope " in 1931, the U . S . patent for Tihanyi's transmitting tube would not be granted until May 1939 . The patent for his receiving tube had been granted the previous October.

From 1936, when the infant BBC Television Service chose it above Baird's mechanical system, total electronic picture scanning, based on the work of Manfred von Ardenne and the iconoscope invented by Vladimir Zworykin, became increasingly prevalent and Nipkow's invention was no longer essential to further development of television.

In a Technikatrtneti Szemle article, subsequently reissued on the internet, entitled " The Iconoscope : Kalman Tihanyi and the Development of Modern Television ", Tihanyi's daughter Katalin Tihanyi Glass notes that her father found the " storage principle " included a " new physical phenomenon ", the photoconductive effect:

The image dissector has no " charge storage " characteristic; the vast majority of electrons emitted by the photocathode are excluded by the scanning aperture, and thus wasted rather than being stored on a photo-sensitive target, as in the iconoscope or image orthicon ( see below ), which largely accounts for its low light sensitivity.

Kay built an iconoscope camera in 1958 that could do a funny thing, recalled fellow project engineer William H . Woodworth . It occurred to him that he could build a little circuit into there that would put a little blip in the picture, and he could make the little blip track things that would move in the picture . The two engineers, soon joined by Dave Livingston, Jack Crawford, George Lewis, Larry Brown, Steve Brugler, Bob ( Sam ) Cunningham and several others, decided to research the idea further and quickly secured some seed money from the Navy to advance the concept.
