Following the southern descent for, instead of turning steeply southeast towards Bruntscar a path continues south running adjacent the wall passing Combe Scar and West Fell to reach the limestone pavements at Ewe's Top.

Weathering of the Yoredale Beds has produced a stepped profile to the valley sides, consisting of a shelf of limestone, sometimes grassy but often displaying such karst features as limestone pavement, gorges and sinkholes.

Located about south west of the village is Great Asby Scar, which has been declared a national nature reserve, partly due to its limestone geology and also the flora that grow in its limestone pavement areas.

The main cliff faces are made up of rocks known as Dalton Beds, above which are Urswick Limestones, of which the limestone pavement ( here and elsewhere around Morecambe Bay, including Hutton Roof Crags ) has been formed.

In 1999, the Sharp Estate Silverdale which includes Heald Brow and Leavens Field ( land of the former Hazelwood Estate ) was acquired by the conservation and has cleared areas of scrub woodland that had invaded limestone pavement.

In the northwest corner of the county, straddling the border with [ Cumbria, is the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty ( AONB ), characterised by its limestone pavements and home to the Leighton Moss nature reserve.

On the west side of the 80 metre ( 260 foot ) high cliff face are about 400 irregular stone steps : these form part of the route of the Pennine Way and lead to an uneven limestone pavement at the top.

Where the surface of the pavement is shattered into gravel, many of the hardier Arctic or alpine plants can be found, when the limestone pavement is covered by a thin layer of soil, patches of grass are seen, interspersed with herbaceous plants.

Many other rare and endangered species can be found to the east on the Stora Allvaret, although in this northern part of �land the alvar habitat is more fragmented than in the south of the island where large expanses of limestone pavement ecosystem exist.

Just outside the village, to the west, is Little Asby Common, which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation because of the plant species that inhabit the limestone pavement areas, as well as the limestone geology of the area.
