So we are given multiple sets of heroine and hero : the Kunqu lovers with their delicately choreographed gestures and swooping, high-pitched song-speech; the Italian opera lovers emoting and arpeggiating like so many Rodolfos and Normas; American teen-agers putting on their makeup, reading fashion magazines and dying as much of boredom as lovesickness.

Through the rest of the novel we watch Blue move through his " riled Irish woes " to encounters with his 11 siblings, among whom " lovesickness is epidemic, " to the wrong side of middle age, to an understanding that " Life is the answer, and it's love that's the question " to, in short, equanimity, that virtue of virtues.

" Dominic Umile of " PopMatters " found the album's " lovesickness and confessions " to be " as tenderly delivered as its hazy atmospherics are ", and, in their " bare authenticity & far more compelling in repeat indulgences than Deerhunter s explorations . " Tiny Mix Tapes rewarded the album 4 / 5 stars, saying that, while each song has a " distinctive quality " allowing it to stand on its own, by backing out to view the album as a whole, the " individual elements unify & mak [ ing ] a greater holistic product ."
