The competition was marred by drugs bans for medalling athletes : a Brazilian coach, Jayme Netto, admitted that he had administered the banned drug recombinant EPO on five of his athletes without their knowledge, which included : 800 m silver medallist Josiane Tito, 200 m bronze medallist Bruno de Barros, heptathlon champion Lucimara da Silva and 400 m hurdles silver medallist Luciana Fran�a.

The A, B, and C semifinals were for those rowers who still had a chance at medalling, and the top two in each of those semifinals moved on to the A final ( top 6 places ), the next two to the B final ( places 7-12 ), and the bottom two in each to the C final ( 13-18 ).

Following the breakup of the Soviet Union, they competed together as one nation for the last time at the 1992 Summer Olympics as a " Unified Team " winning the gold . though not as dominant as the Soviet Union and with the emergence of new countries excelling in gymnastics and having a gymnast apparatus specialist, Russia has maintained the tradition of gymnastics excellence, medalling at every Worlds and Olympic competition in both MAG and WAG disciplines, except in the Aleksandr Balandin, Maria Paseka, Nikolai Kuksenkov, Ksenia Afanasyeva, Aliya Mustafina, Denis Ablyazin, Emin Garibov, Viktoria Komova, David Belyavskiy, Nikita Nagornyy, Maria Kharenkova, Nikita Ignatyev, Daria Spiridonova, Angelina Melnikova, Natalia Kapitonova, Andrei Makolov, Elena Eremina and Seda Tutkhalyan.
