To enable the office to effectively perform its work, an IBM System / 34 mini computer was installed; this computer allowed the data to be entered and verified, and final reports to be produced, which would then be utilized by the various governmental ministries.

Mr . Williams resigned from IBM in 1978 to found Canada's first public software company, Sydney Development Corporation ( " SDC " ), initially developing an online real-time project management system for mainframe computers; then various different business applications for mini computers; and eventually becoming the first developer and publisher of computer games for microcomputers in Canada.

NEL operated an indentured apprentice training scheme and offered a wide range of skills for young engineers before being privatised ranging between light machining, heavy machining, fitting, electro-discharge-machining, jig and horizontal boring and in later years CNC machining, programming and introductions to FMS ( flexible manufacturing system ) and CAD / CAM facilities running KCurve on DEC / VAX mini computers.

Kekst and Company began with four clients : Itel Corporation of San Francisco, a capital equipment leasing company, which Kekst would later advise on a complex and highly lucrative transaction with GE Capital Corporation; Larwin, a Los Angeles based home building concern that also had two publicly traded Dymo Industries of San Francisco, a label-maker manufacturer; and Interdata of Long Branch NJ, which produced mini computers.
