A 2nd Clasp to the Medal is awarded to an officer on completing 20 years of qualifying service in recognition of his long and exemplary service and good conduct in the Singapore Police Force.

Such service on the active list was reckoned two-fold as qualifying service towards the requisite twenty years, whether such service was in the Naval Forces, Military Forces or Air Forces.

However, full-time exemplary service in the Canadian Forces or in any other occupation eligible for award of an Exemplary Service Medal may count as qualifying service, if the service has not been previously recognized.

The "'New Zealand Defence Service Medal "'( NZDSM ) is a military service medal awarded to former and current members of the New Zealand Defence Force, for qualifying service since 3 September 1945.

Additional service clasps, each indicating a further 5 years after the initial 15 year qualifying service, can still be issued to persons awarded the RFD, RFM or DFSM . The first four clasps to the medal are indicated by rosettes.

To resolve the issue, the period of qualifying service for the John Chard Medal was reduced to ten years in 1986, to bring the John Chard series of Citizen Force long service awards in line with the Good Service Medal series.

Service lost may be recovered if the Soldier is separated honorably from the AGR program and reverts to troop program unit service, for example, a Soldier serves 1 year and 6 months of qualifying service and is ordered to an AGR tour.

An Officer who had previously been awarded the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve Long Service and Good Conduct Medal for service as a rating, could subsequently be awarded the decoration and still wear the medal, provided both periods of qualifying service had been completed.

Upon completion of further periods of ten years of qualifying service, the Medalje vir Troue Diens-Medal for Loyal Service and the appropriate bar may be awarded in addition to previous medals for long service which had been awarded for service in these former forces.

Men who were invalided out of South Africa due to wounds prior to 1 January 1902 but who returned and served any time between 1 January 1902 and 31 May 1902 were also granted the medal, provided they had completed the 18 months aggregate qualifying service.
