Taylor and Vinn discovered that the " " Spirorbis " " fossils found in sedimentary strata, including the Joggins and other Carboniferous coal measures deposited from the Ordovician to Triassic periods are the remains of an extinct order of lophophorates ( now called microconchids ) unrelated to modern marine tube-worms ( Annelids ) to which the genus " Spirorbis " belongs.

The Seattle Fault is the structural boundary where 50 & ndash; 60 millions of years old ( early Tertiary ) basalt of the Crescent Formation on the south has been uplifted & ndash; the Seattle Uplift & ndash; and is tipping into the Seattle Basin, where the Tertiary bedrock is buried under at least of relatively softer, lighter sedimentary strata of the younger Blakeley and Blakely Harbor formations.

Almost all palaeontologists doubt that " Protoavis " is a bird, or that all remains assigned to it even come from a single species, because of the circumstances of its discovery and unconvincing avian Tecovas and Bull Canyon Formations in the Texas panhandle in 1984, in a sedimentary strata of a Triassic river delta, the fossils were a jumbled cache of disarticulated bones that may reflect an incident of mass mortality following a flash flood.

Of the many unconformities ( gaps ) observed in geological strata, the term "'Great Unconformity "'is applied to either the unconformity observed by James Hutton in 1787 at Siccar Point in Scotland, or that observed by John Wesley Powell in the Grand Canyon in 1869 . Both instances are exceptional examples of where the contacts between sedimentary strata and either sedimentary or crystalline strata of greatly different ages, origins, and structure represent periods of geologic time sufficiently long to raise great mountains and then erode them away.
