If you are able to resize the partition to less than the DVD maximum limit ( by deleting all programs you have install media for and then using something like gparted to resize the partition ) and then use some software ( I don't know the specifics of that, perhaps gparted can do that too ? ) to burn an " image file " of your system partition to DVD . Later you can run the process in reverse to burn the image back to the HD if you so desire.
