The African populations " senegalensis " and " phoenicophila " have a bluish grey rump and upper tail coverts but differ in the shades of the neck and wing feathers while " aegyptiaca " is larger and the head and nape are vinous and upper wing coverts are rufous.

The "'peafowl "'include two Asiatic bird species ( the blue or Indian peafowl originally of India and Sri Lanka and the green peafowl of Myanmar, Indochina, and Java ) and one African species ( the Congo peafowl native only to the Congo Basin ) of birds in the genera " Pavo " and " Afropavo " of the Phasianidae family, the pheasants and their allies, known for the male's piercing call and, among the Asiatic species, his extravagant eye-spotted tail covert feathers which he displays as part of a courtship ritual.

Distinct ring of silvery-white round the eye, succeeded by a black line under the eye; head, mantle, upper wing coverts, and upper tail coverts bright olive-green; back grey, blending into the greenish mantle; wings and tail dark brown, the primaries and tail feathers edged with bright olive-green; chin, throat, and under tail coverts greenish-yellow; rest of the under surface grayish-blue, darkest on the chest, and approaching grayish-white on the abdomen.
