The porticos around the piazza, built in 1887 98 by Gaetano Koch, were in memory of the ancient buildings on the same sites, while the basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri on the piazza is based on a wing of the baths ( with its architect Michelangelo, using the tepidarium as one of the wings of its spacious Greek cross plan ).

Gustave Boulanger's " Phryne " shows the ancient Greek courtesan in full seductive flight; George Frederic Watts'" Wife of Plutus " is portrayed bare breasted and writhing on a bed, her eyes closed, her head thrown back as if in ecstasy; and Lawrence Alma-Tadema's recumbent nude " Tepidarium " seems to be awaiting a lover.

Following the entrance to the thermae, is the apodyterium ( dressing spaces ), with natatio ( cold pools ), before entering the palaestra ( gymnasium ) or frigidarium ( cold baths ) followed by tepidarium ( warm baths ) and caldarium ( hot chambers ), which were heated by the hypocaust ( underground structures formed by arches or pillars, which allowed the circulation of hot air ) from the praefurnium ( furnace ).

The vast majority of Godward's extant images feature women in Classical dress, posed against these landscape features, although there are some semi-nude and fully nude figures included in his " oeuvre " ( a notable example being " In The Tepidarium " ( 1913 ), a title shared with a controversial Alma-Tadema painting of the same subject that resides in the Lady Lever Art Gallery ).

Also in the last room is " The Tepidarium, " his most famous picture, aptly named for its emotional temperature : a stiff, mannered, patrician panorama of naked and seminaked women lounging in a painstaking reproduction of an ancient bath, with its own Freudian skylight; it is an image that set the stage for the sort of silly soft-core pornography you find in the current show of Victorian nudes at the Brooklyn Museum of Art.

The baths were constructed in the third century by the Roman Emperor Caracalla ( 212-217 ), who also constructed the Baths of Caracalla in Rome, in honour of Asclepios, the God of Medicine, and built around three principal rooms : the " caldarium " ( hot bath ), the " tepidarium " ( warm bath ) and the " frigidarium " ( cold bath ) in a typically laid-out 80m x 120m classical complex.

The current buildings comprise : the baths which are fully functional consisting of a " frigidarium " ( cold bath ), " caldarium " ( hot bath ) and " tepidarium " ( tempered bath ) together with latrines, a dressing room and a relaxation area; the manor or main building with a large reception hall and a number of adjacent rooms in which the most important finds from the site are displayed; the Roman kitchen ( recently completed ); a residential building; and a tavern, which was not part of the original villa but which serves meals based on ancient Roman recipes.

How ( New York ); " The Fountain of Mercury in Pompei " acquired by Mrs Scudder of Sacramento, California, " Il giorno natalizio del padre a Pompei " ( The Birthday Trip of Father to Pompeii ), acquired by Mr Head of San Francisco, California; " Tepidarium delle Terme di Pompei ", acquired by Goupil Gallery of Paris; " La Vestale ", acquired by Mr Phillips Phoenix; " An offer to Diana of Ephesus ", acquired by Mrs M .
