The basic objectives of the railway programme in the Sixth Plan -LRB- 1980-85 -RRB- were to expand the capacity so that the railways could cope with the expected increase in freight and passenger traffic ; to modernise equipment and practices ; to promote better utilisation of the existing assets and make further progress in the direction of achieving self-sufficiency in equipment by undertaking increased local production of critical items . छठी योजना के लक्ष्य छठी पंचवर्षीय योजना ( सन् 1980-85 ) में रेलवे कार्यक्रमों का मौलिक उद्देश्य क्षमता का विस्तार करना Zहै जिससे रेलवे भार और यात्री परिवहन की संभावित वृद्धि को पूरा किया जा सके , उपकरणों तथा काम करने के तरीकों की व्यवस्था को आधुनिक किया जा सके , उपलब्ध माल-मता के उपयोग को बेहतर रूप से बढ़ाया जा सके , तथा अत्यावश्यक और संवेदनशील वस्तुओं के स्थानिक उत्पादन में वृद्धि के कार्य को अपने हाथ में लेकर उपकरणों में आत्मनिर्भरता प्राप्त करने की दिशा में और अधिक प्रगति की जा
