The Wheeler Peak glacier can be considered an alpine glacier which started melting at and the effects of the glacier can easily be seen by observing the pathways ( slopes, canyons, and streams ) that the melting glacial water has cut through over several years.

Eagle Nest ( elevation 8, 258 feet ), on the north shore of Eagle Nest Lake, bills itself as the Center of New Mexico's High Country and affords the best view of granite-tough Wheeler Peak, poking aloofly above the tree line into its gray, misty canopy.
