Our region is an ecological overlap zone at the extreme southern range of some Northern trees like the white birch, the extreme northern range of Southern species like the willow oak and the northeastern range limit of some Midwestern species like the Osage orange.

All plants but the National Christmas Tree had been removed from the area in the fall and the ground regraded as part of a widening of E Street NW . During early 1934, the tree was cut down and replaced with double row of willow oaks.
