Singh was commissioned into the 2nd battalion of the Rajput Regiment in 1978.

His last words were " Men of the Rajput Regiment, you were born to die for your country.

Before he retired, he made a farewell visit to his parent regiment, the Rajput Regiment, at the Rajput Regimental Centre accompanied by his son and daughter.

He was the Colonel of The Rajput Regiment to which he belonged and also Honorary Colonel of The Brigade of Guards, by virtue of being the Army Chief.

Mukund was an alumnus of Officers Training Academy, and after graduating, he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Rajput Regiment ( 22 Rajput ) in 2006.

When the princely states were amalgamated with the Indian Union, the Bikaner Sadul Light Infantry and the Jodhpur Sardar Infantry joined the Rajput Regiment and became 19th and 20th Rajput respectively.

The Battalion, less two companies, moved to the Gulpur Sector to relieve 3rd Battalion, The Rajput Regiment, which was moving out of the 93rd Infantry Brigade Sector on 1 October 1965.

He handed over the Centre on 18 January 1948 to Lt Colonel Rajbir Chopra, formerly of the Rajput Regiment, who became the first Indian commandant of the 4GRRC . Colonel Ran Davidson, however, continued as adviser till 27 March 1948.
