During 1974 an American tanker Transhuron ran aground on an atoll of the Kiltan Island -LRB- Lakshadweep -RRB- and spilled over 5,000 tonnes of special navy fuel oil . तेल टैंकरों की दुर्घटनाएं भारत में भी कम नहीं होती हैं.1974 में ट्रांशरान नाम का एक अमरीकी टैंकर किल्टन द्वीप ( लक्षद्वीप ) में तलहटी से टकरा गया था.इससे उसमें भरा हुआ जलसेना के लिए लाया गया 5000 टन विशिष्ट ईंधन समुद्र की सतह पर फैल गया .
