Growing traffic demands led to the opening of the avenue through the plaza, and around the Obelisk, in 1971 . The name " Corrientes Street " ( Calle Corrientes ) is often still preferred over " Corrientes Avenue " ( Avenida Corrientes ) specially on the famous centrical stretch.
