The rust-colored birds would flash up from the ground at 20 or 30 yards-- the males uttering crepitant alarm calls, kek-ek-ek-ek-ek-- and bank down the wind : single birds, pairs, coveys of six and eight, their white underwings semaphoring until they leveled out in swift, purposeful flight.
