Development takes place in three stages larva, protonymph, and deutonymph.

Because of their parasitic lifestyle, members of the Psoroptidia do not exhibit a deutonymph stage.

The active deutonymph develops an additional pair of legs ( for a total of eight ).

The deutonymph stage then takes place after the blood meal at a place usually away from the snake.

The pattern of stages is shared with that of other members of the Prostigmata : egg, pre-larva, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, tritonymph and adult ( male or female ).
