In Harrison's report of the battle to Secretary of War John Armstrong, Jr ., he said of Shelby, " I am at a loss to how to mention [ the service ] of Governor Shelby, being convinced that no eulogism of mine can reach his merit . " In 1817, Shelby received the thanks of Congress and was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for his service in the war.
